W-I-N: What's Important Now
Chris Heiler | October 6th, 2009

"What's Important Now...

What's Important Now...

What's Important Now..."

These are the words I utter to myself over and over to remind me to stay in the moment when I'm with my son, Charlie. Whether I'm feeding him or watching him play in his jumparoo, my thoughts inevitably and effortlessly drift to work related tasks.

The fact I have a difficult time staying in the present is one of my biggest flaws. Maybe I'm just not acclimated to being Mr. Mom quite yet (although I am enjoying it).

The phrase "What's Important Now", and it's acronym W-I-N., was coined by the legendary football coach Lou Holtz in his book Winning Every Day: The Game Plan for Success.

Coach Holtz's mantra is pretty simple--keep your mind in the present and focused on what is most important right now. The concept may be simple, but actually doing it can be extremely difficult; especially if you own your own business. Beyond your landscape design work, tasks may include managing employees, managing finances, marketing your business and on and on...

I've found it essential to ask myself the W-I-N question every day--"What is the most important thing I can do today?"

I encourage you to ask yourself this question as well as a few others:

"What is the most important thing I can do this week?"

"What is the most important thing I can do this month?"

"What is the most important thing I can do this quarter?"

If you ask yourself the last question first, the others typically fall into place. If you know what you need to accomplish in the next quarter, identifying what's most important each month, week and day should be easy.

I'm going to treat this Profit Tip as a two-parter: next week I'll discuss steps that will help you focus on accomplishing what's important now.

An aside:

I wrote this tip on Monday which took about 40 minutes worth of writing but almost 12 hours to finish. A certain little somebody kept waking up too quickly. Thank goodness this was the only important thing I needed to get done today!

Here's a video of the little guy (The video quality is kind of bad; I'm not sure what happened).
