Goal Setting: Discovering Your Purpose

Picture yourself behind the wheel of an old, beat up school bus. With hands firmly on the wheel, you glance in your rear view mirror to find your employees filling the seats behind you. They look anxious and confused.

Now, glance out your window and you'll notice the streets cluttered with similar school buses driven by your competition. The street is congested with bumper to bumper school buses. No doubt these passengers are a bit confused themselves.

Your employees, somewhat irritated, are questioning you: "Why are we on this bus?", "Where are we going?"

As you consider your answer to these questions, you suddenly realize that you have just circled the corner Starbucks for the third time. You've been driving in circles.

Another question from the rear: "Where are you taking us!?!? Do you even know where you're going!?!?"

Somewhat confused yourself, you are unable to answer your employees.

Back to reality...

Do you know where you are going? Where are you driving your company?

Why are you behind the wheel in the first place?

The most successful companies in the Green Industry can answer these critical questions. They know who they are, where they're going and why they've chosen their destination.

These companies and individuals have absolute clarity of purpose.

You must have this same absolute clarity of purpose to market your products and services effectively in the landscape industry.

The first behavior, or habit, you must cultivate in order to market your services more effectively and to clarify your purpose is the habit of setting goals.

Clarifying your goals--what you want, what you want to do, what you want to be--enables you to discover the purpose that will drive your company. This sense of purpose will then drive your marketing efforts.

As a member of LandscapeLeadership, you will learn:

  • Specific exercises that teach you how to discover your absolute clarity of purpose.
  • How to identify your ideal prospect to allow for a more targeted marketing strategy.

W-I-N Part II: How to Accomplish What's Important Now Last week I wrote about Lou Holtz's mantra "What's Important Now"; or W-I-N.  The concept is pretty simple--keep your mind in the present and focused on what is most important right now.  The concept may be simple, but actually doing it can be extremely difficult . . . keep reading

W-I-N: What's Important Now The phrase "What's Important Now", and it's acronym W-I-N., was coined by the legendary football coach Lou Holtz in his book "Winning Every Day: The Game Plan for Success".
