Your Landscaping Portfolio: A Marketing Tool, Not a Sales Tool
Chris Heiler | June 19, 2010

A compelling landscaping portfolio is important, but many times the importance is a bit overstated or misguided.

I say this because often times a landscaping portfolio is mistakenly treated as a sales tool instead of a marketing tool. There is a distinction.

You're not going to win or lose jobs based on your landscaping portfolio. Other factors weigh into a buying decision more so than your portfolio. Relationships, price and third party endorsements (publicity, social media, etc) typically carry more weight than an impressive landscaping portfolio.

And let's face it, some potential clients could care less about your past work. They only care about what you are going to do for them today.

Your landscaping portfolio won't close sales. But it will open doors to greater opportunities. How so? Here are a few ways:

  • A compelling landscaping portfolio can build your reputation amongst other professionals who could potentially recommend your landscaping services. This includes architects, builders, realtors, property managers, etc.
  • A compelling landscaping portfolio can increase your third party endorsements and referrals, especially through social media.
  • A compelling landscaping portfolio can grab the attention of the media and lead to free publicity for your landscape business.

If you're relying on your landscaping portfolio while sitting at the kitchen table in hopes of selling a job, you better rethink your strategy. You need to be utilizing your portfolio as a marketing tool before you ever get to the prospect's kitchen table.
