Tech Tip: When was the Last Time You Backed-Up Your Computer files?
Chris Heiler- Editor

How would you feel if you woke up tomorrow and everything on your computer was gone?

Unfortunetly this is a reality I'm sure many of you have faced first hand.

I've been fortunate that I've never lost my files or programs. In the back of my mind I know I should be backing them up, but I just don't get around to doing it. I cringe when I think about losing all of my cad files, business financials or contacts.

And then I discovered online backup software.

The software I use is called Carbonite.

Online backup has been around for a while, but Carbonite is different from other software in that it is effortless and truly automatic.

How Does Carbonite Work?

The first thing you need to do is download the software from carbonite.com. It takes about 10 minutes to download and install this.

Next you will designate the specific folders and programs you want to back up. Carbonite then automatically transfers these to its secure servers over the internet.

It will actually take 2 or 3 days for the initial backup. From here on, Carbonite works quietly in the background looking for new and changed files to back up. It will automatically back up these files when your computer is idle.

Here is what your files will look like:

Carbonite puts colored dots on your file and folder icons to indicate their backup status.

A green dot means it is backed up and has not been modified since the last backup; its backup copy is up-to-date.

A yellow dot means that the file or folder is awaiting backup either because it is new or has been modified since the last backup.

Restoring files is also quick and easy. If you lose or delete files, it takes just a few clicks from your desktop to get them back. If your computer is damaged or stolen, you can easily restore your files to a new computer.

Another advantage to using Carbonite is that there are no limits on backup storage capacity.

As far as cost, a year subscription will cost $49.95. This is similiar to other backup devices such as usb discs. Carbonite does offer a free 15 day trial.

I absolutely love this software. I no longer think about backing up files or what would happen if I lost everything. Carbonite is so effortless and easy to use I think you will find it worth the $50 price tag.

You can take advantage of the 15 day free trial by clicking here.
