The Three Letter Word That Guarantees Success
Chris Heiler | February 18, 2010
When I was 12 years old I remember adding "a pound of bacon and cheese" to my annual Christmas list. I was a pretty simple kid; although maybe a bit odd :-) I was crushed Christmas morning when I didn't receive my pound of bacon and cheese. My mother told me that she didn't think I was serious. Every Christmas since I asked my mom if she was going to get me a pound of bacon and cheese. After about 20 years she finally took me seriously and I received my long awaited wish for Christmas. Actually, it was a couple pounds of each! All I had to do was keep on asking! And that's the three letter word that guarantees success--just "Ask". I believe this single idea has led to more success in my life than any other. This was true when I started my first company and it remains true today. When I began my landscape design career, I would regularly contact other designers I admired to ask for help. I remember asking, "Can you show me how to do this?", "Can you show me some of your work?", "Can you tell me how you did that?". I'm sure some people thought I was a real pain in the ass. But, you know what? Sometimes you have to be! I would do the same with architects and other professionals: "Can I show you my portfolio?", "Can you introduce me to...", "Can we work together on this project?" Same with media and publishers: "Can I write an article for you?", "Would you be interested in featuring my project in your magazine?" Here's the thing: most people are willing to help you. Most want to help you succeed. But, they don't know how exactly. You have to tell them! You have to ask! This is such a simple concept, yet so many people struggle to ask for what they want. Whether you need to ask for help or advice, ask for a sale or better terms, or ask for an opportunity to collaborate with someone, you have to go after what you want! No one will hand it to you. Of course, we can't go around constantly asking for people's help while giving nothing in return. We have to show gratitude along the way and reciprocate as much as possible. Can you remember any of your successes that began with you asking something of someone? What have you asked for lately? I'd love to hear your thoughts. I'm asking that you please leave your comments below :-) To your success,
Chris Heiler
